Taking its name from the geographical position for Stockholm – 59º North, 18º East – the company presents works primarily by Swedish choreographers. The dancers are all members of the Royal Swedish Ballet, founded by King Gustav III in 1773. This smaller touring company was formed in 1997 by Madeleine Onne to approach choreography and performance from a different perspective than the parent troupe. The original 1997 group included three Swedish dancers who studied at Jacob’s Pillow in the late 1980s: Jan-Erik Wikström, Anders Nordström and Anna Valev, and the company has returned in three seasons since. Stockholm/59º North works with emerging choreographers and reconstructs rarely seen dances. The excerpt seen here is by Ulysses Dove, whose work has also been performed at the Pillow by Pacific Northwest Ballet and RhythMEK.
