Seen here in its U.S. debut, Mimulus is based in Belo Horizonte, Brazil (which is, coincidentally, also the home town of Grupo Corpo). The title of this full-evening work is literally translated as “On the left-hand side of who goes up the street” and it refers to a specific street in Belo Horizonte where members of Mimulus gather each day. The company is directed by Jomar Mesquita, who has created an innovative movement language through the study and practice of ballroom and social dances. Mesquita teaches widely in addition to performing and choreographing, and he led the Samba Program in The School at Jacob’s Pillow in 2011. The company most recently performed at the Pillow in a 2012 engagement of Por Um Fio (By a Thread).
