Dancers, the contemporary ballet company directed by Dennis Wayne, presented its world debut performances at Jacob’s Pillow in 1975. Wayne came to prominence as a member of the Harkness Ballet in 1964, and later appeared with the Joffrey Ballet and American Ballet Theatre. He gathered virtuoso performers from these and other troupes to form the nucleus of his own company, which appeared at New York’s City Center and at the Spoleto Festival in addition to its Pillow engagements. Italian choreographer Vittorio Biagi was born in 1941 and was a member of Maurice Béjart’s company in the 1960s. He founded his own group, Danza Prospettiva, in 1978. This footage was created for a television documentary produced by WGBY-TV in Springfield, with a title borrowed from the company’s marketing slogan, Just Call Us Dancers.
