Born and raised in California, Gerring began working as a choreographer in New York in 1993. From its inception in 1998, Liz Gerring Dance Company has been exploring non-narrative, abstract movement. The company is noted for its close collaborations with contemporary visual artists as well as a longtime association with electronic music composer Michael J. Schumacher. Gerring’s movement evolves from cause and effect rather than storytelling, though her background includes traditional dance composition training at The Juilliard School. After an initial appearance on Inside/Out in 2006, the company made its official debut in 2012 with a full-evening work entitled she dreams in code. The 2015 appearance seen here occurred in the same season when Gerring was selected to receive the Jacob’s Pillow Dance Award.
