Acknowledged in Spain as one of the leading innovators in modern Flamenco, María Pagés started dancing at age 4 in her native Seville. As a performer, she toured worldwide with the companies of Antonio Gades, Mario Maya, and Rafael Aguilar, as well as with Riverdance The Show. She is also widely known for her screen performances in the films of Carlos Saura. In 1990, she set up her own company, which tours extensively from its base of operations in Madrid. La Tirana is one of Pagés’s most popular works, inspired by a famous Goya painting that hangs in the Prado.
