Since emigrating from Osaka, Japan to New York City in 1977, Yoshiko Chuma has become known as a firebrand in American post-modern dance. Her early New York experiences were with Robert Wilson, Mabou Mines, Merce Cunningham, and Douglas Dunn. She and her company have toured widely for decades, and she was recognized with a Bessie Award for sustained achievements as a choreographer in 2007. Critics have noted her “maverick imagination and crazy-quilt multimedia work” and lauded her “raucous dance/music/theater spectacles on American pop themes.” The presentation seen here, featured in the 1987 Season Opening Gala, was part of a multi-week residency.
