The founder and director of Dorrance Dance, Michelle Dorrance, received the 2013 Jacob’s Pillow Dance Award and has been lauded as one of today’s most imaginative tap choreographers. She grew up performing with the North Carolina Youth Tap Ensemble under the direction of Gene Medler, and has since performed in STOMP and with the companies of Savion Glover and Jason Samuels Smith among many others. The work seen here was partially created at the Pillow, and it continues exploring a system of sampling the dancers’ own taps as part of the sound score. The forerunner of this presentation, ETM: The Initial Approach, was seen in a two-week world premiere engagement, following directly on the heels of Dorrance’s 2013 collaboration with Toshi Reagon, The Blues Project, a full-evening work which had a return engagement in 2015.
